Anne-Marie Davee MS, RD, LD
Dietician, Bowdoin College
A Registered and Licensed Dietitian with over 25 years of experience in the health promotion field. Educational Background includes: a bachelors degree in Foods & Nutrition (University of Maine), Dietetic Internship at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, a masters degree in nutrition with an exercise science concentration (University of Maine), an advanced graduate study certificate in public health (University of New England), and State of Maine Teacher Certificate in Health (#520) Published research includes the effects of diet and exercise on bone density in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. Published research articles regarding Maines Vending and A La Carte Intervention in Public High Schools appeared in Preventing Chronic Disease Journal, Journal of School Health and Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior. Anne-Marie is a competitive runner and tri-athlete. She has completed twenty (26 mile) marathons and ten triathlons including the first Womens Olympic Trials Marathon in 1984.

Bernie Hershberger PhD
Licensed Psychologist
Director of Counseling Services, Bowdoin College
Dr. Hershberger went to Goshen College as an undergraduate and the Ohio State University for graduate school. He has worked at Boston University, University of Missouri, and Bowling Green State University before coming to Bowdoin College. Dr Hershberger also worked at the Jackson Brook Psychiatric Hospital Outpatient Department for six years immediately prior to working at Bowdoin College. Areas of interest include; treatment of anxiety, hypnosis, sports psychology, meditation, and Buddhist psychology.

Michael Pleacher MD
Physician, OA Centers for Orthopedics
Team Physician, Bowdoin College
Dr. Pleacher completed his undergraduate studies at Wake Forest University and then earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA. After completing a Pediatric residency at Maine Medical Center, Dr. Pleacher went on to complete a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Maine Medical Center in conjunction with OA Centers for Orthopaedics. Dr. Pleacher then spent 6 years out west, most recently serving as a sports medicine doctor and team physician for the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Dr. Pleacher is excited to return to Maine to practice as a sports medicine physician with OA. Additionally, he will serve as the team doctor for Bowdoin College and Brunswick area high schools, and he will continue to serve as a team physician for the US Cross Country Ski Team. Dr. Pleacher and his family enjoy the outdoor sports that abound in Maine, particularly downhill and cross-country skiing.

Matt Somma PT, DPT, CSCS, OAPT
Physical Therapist, OA Centers for Orthopedic Brunswick Supervisor
Matthew received his doctorate in physical therapy from the University of New England in 2009. Prior to becoming a physical therapist, Matthew became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Matthew worked as a strength coach in the San Diego Padres organization in 2006. He was located at their spring training complex in Peoria, Arizona where he instructed players affiliated with their Rookie ball affiliate, the Peoria Padres. While with the Padres, he was involved in training a championship team in the Arizona League.
Upon receiving his physical therapy license in 2009, Matthew worked at a physical therapy clinic in Scarborough. His focus was on surgical and non-surgical treatment of patients with spinal dysfunction. Matthew joined OA in January of 2010 as a staff clinician at the OA Performance Center in Saco. His clinical interests include biomechanical analysis of the overhead athlete, rehabilitation of the shoulder, and rehabilitation of low back dysfunction. Currently, Matthew resides in Gray, Maine with his wife Christie.

Dennis Russell MEd, ATC, EMT-P
Assistant Athletic Trainer, Bowdoin College
Russell is a Maine-licensed, NATABOC Certified Athletic Trainer and Maine-licensed Paramedic. He graduated from the University of Maine with a bachelor's degree in Kinesiology and Physical Education, with a concentration in athletic training in 1998. He earned a Master's degree in Education from the University of Maine in 2007. From 2000 to 2007 he served as an athletic trainer and University Ambulance Service Chief for the University of Maine. He came to Bowdoin College in 2007 as an assistant athletic trainer. Russell is a Sports Medicine professional with extensive experience in emergency medical care. He has worked in multiple settings throughout his career, including high schools, a physical therapy clinic and Division I and III NCAA institutions.

Michael F. Bergeron, Ph.D., FACSM is the Executive Director of the National Youth Sports Health & Safety Institute and Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Sanford School of Medicine of the University of South Dakota at the Sanford USD Medical Center. He also has an appointment as a Senior Scientist in Sanford Children’s Health Research Center. Internationally recognized for his research in exercise, heat stress, and youth athletic health and leadership in the sports medicine community, Dr. Bergeron is a Fellow and past Trustee of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and also past Chair of the ACSM Strategic Health Initiative – Youth Sports and Health Committee. He is currently a member of the National Federation of State High School Associations Sports Medicine Advisory Committee and was recently a consultant member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Executive Committee for the Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness. Dr. Bergeron serves as an Editorial Board member for the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism and Journal of Athletic Training. He also serves as a clinical and scientific consultant to the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Professional Tour Medical Services. Dr. Bergeron has participated recently as a leading faculty member and author on Department of Defense consensus panels and published papers on Exertional Heat Stroke: Return to Duty; Extreme Conditioning Programs; and Sickle Cell Trait – Mitigating Risks for Warfighters and Athletes. He has also worked with a number of junior, collegiate, and professional athletes on training and nutrition related to preparation, competition, and recovery strategies in the heat, with a particular emphasis on helping athletes to avoid exertional heat illness and injury. Dr. Bergeron’s current research is focused on the effects of exercise in the heat and thermal strain on neuromuscular control and injury risk, as well as glycemic control in youth athletes with Type 1 diabetes. The institute is also examining thermoregulatory and other physiological and autonomic characteristics associated with mild traumatic brain injury and recovery.

Dr Bernie Hershberger graduated from Goshen College and completed graduate degrees in counseling psychology at the Ohio State University. Bernie has worked at Bowdoin College for the past 14 years; prior to that he was on the Counseling Staffs at Boston University and Bowling Green State University. He has been providing sports psychology consultations at Bowdoin College for the past seven years focusing on visualization, hypnosis, and assisting students with anxiety related to injuries.

Matthew joined Orthopedic Associates in January of 2010 as a staff clinician at the OA Performance Center in Saco. His clinical interests include biomechanical analysis of the overhead athlete, rehabilitation of the shoulder, and rehabilitation of low back dysfunction. Now at the Brunswick OA Clinic, Matt specializes in the treatment of athletes with musculoskeletal dysfunctions and is certified in the Functional Movement Systems (FMS). Recently, Matt became a certified pitching instructor through the National Pitching Association (NPA).
